Performance & Efficiency

High frequency remote monitoring solutions from SMS provide ship operators with operational and performance data in near real time on mobile devices and at the desktop.

Climate Action and Clean Air

The IMO and regional players led by the EU are now actively pursuing regulation backed initiatives and market-based measures aimed at enhancing the energy efficiency of ships and reducing GHG emissions. As result, the shipping industry is having to work with an ever-growing list of requirements associated with climate action such as DCS – the IMO Data Collection System, and EU ETS the European Union Emission Trading System. There is also a need to comply with international, regional, national and local regulation aimed at reducing air pollution.

Ship operators are exploring new technologies to improve efficiency, and each vessel must have in place a Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP). Monitoring and reporting of fuel consumption form part of the mandatory requirement for vessels over 5000GT.

SMS remote monitoring solutions

SMS remote monitoring solutions provide access to ship operational and performance data for vessel operators and managers on the move and at the desktop including:

  • Fuel Mass Flow Rate
  • Fuel Temperature and Density
  • Total Engine Fuel Consumption
  • Engine RPM
  • Engine Load
  • Ship Speed Over Ground
  • Ship Position
  • Ship Heading
  • SO2/CO2 Compliance Ratio
  • SO2 & NOx Emissions Concentrations
  • CO2 Emissions Concentrations
  • CO2 Mass Flow Rate
  • Total CO2 Emissions

SMS remote monitoring can be used to:

  • Collate data for reporting purposes
  • Confirm compliance with air pollution regulation
  • Monitor effectiveness of efficiency improvement measures
  • Identify operational practice which offers the potential for further efficiency improvements and savings
Vessel increasing speed twice a day with corresponding increases in fuel consumption High frequency monitoring allows close inspection of operating practice – the individual spikes in fuel consumption result from auto back flush filter operation

Data from instruments is polled by the SMS Data Acquisition Unit at high frequency and logged with ship position, speed and heading. All records are stored for a minimum of 18 months. Data is securely transmitted ashore via satellite communications in small packets to provide up to near real-time reporting of the vessel’s operation and performance. Typically mounted inside the engine room control console the Data Acquisition Unit is compact and provided with a visual display screen for the ECR console. The screen provides straightforward reporting of parameters.

Near real time data with downloadable history is available on desktop and mobile devices anywhere in the world where internet access is available. SMS takes data security seriously.  Accounts are password protected, and visibility of data is tailored for individual users. Users can view data from one or more vessels in a fleet and data can be presented in various ways to suit user needs.
